Assalamualaikum and hi there! My first movie review will be on X-Men: Apocalypse!!! I watched the movie last weekend with my roommates and the truth is, well... It's actually my first X-Men movie :> I wanted to steer away from giving out spoilers so I waited quite some time after watching the film before posting this review. So for those who haven't watched the movie yet, I think it's better for you to stop reading my post now xD
I'll just skip my summary of the story because I want this to be as spoiler-free as possible.
This week's prompt: In my opinion, the most significant aspect of the material is...
Dissatisfaction of a world that is truly unjust to you. This aspect speaks for itself a lot especially when Magneto, even after gaining a chance of redemption in his life, is robbed away from the loves of his life in just one day. He's living a peaceful life with his lovely wife and daughter as Erik Lehnsherr, but with just a single revelation of his true nature, the people around him immediately perceives him in a totally different way. That's what dissatisfies me too; how instantly Magneto's colleagues turn their backs on him, even though Magneto has been working together with them for quite some time without causing any trouble at all. When Magneto is confronted by the authorities, his wife and daughter are accidentally killed. Consumed in rage, Magneto murders every single person there. His unstable emotion makes him completely vulnerable to En Sabah Nur's influence. En Sabah Nur takes Magneto to Auschwitz, where his power first manifested, making him remember all the hardships he endured when people discovered his power. Due to this, Magneto realizes that this world is an unjust place for him, and thus proceeds to join En Sabah Nur's ploy to destroy it.
I'm giving this a 7.5/10, mainly because I couldn't catch up much with the story since it's my first X-Men movie. Overall its a great film; I enjoyed the characters' developments and the humor. But the plot itself is quite plain, at least to me. The villain is too simple. His motive of destroying the world in order to reign over a new one with other mutants seems like the typical mindset of villains in movies. Which makes him rather weak, even though he is over powered in some ways and also has strong comrades(Magneto, Angel, Psylocke, and Storm). This movie also seems more about mutants showing off their superpowers; it doesn't speak much about the complexity of the whole series itself. At least that is how it is to me. Still, it's an exciting ride seeing the development of the next generation X-Men. Nightcrawler is superbly hilarious; I immediately took a liking to him and his humor!
I recommend this to all you sci-fi lovers out there! If you haven't watched any X-Men movies before(just like me), well, there will be some parts where you might go 'wait wait why how what who is this person again' to the person sitting next to you, but you can pretty much understand the whole story. So yeah, head out and watch X-Men: Apocalypse!
